Bygone Appledore:

We are always grateful to receive donations of items to add to our archives. This month our thanks go to Mrs Helen Whiting, who contacted us from Australia with the offer of a poster calendar dating back to 1913, which advertises “S.E.W Chapman, Grocer, Draper, Outfitter and Newsagent, Appledore”. Messrs Chapman and Pearson occupied the grocer’s store, which is now the site of Appledore Village Stores .

We are pleased to announce that Stuart Searle will be giving a talk about Appledore Station at our meeting on 12 th March. Stuart was the Signalman on duty at the station on the night of the Appledore Train Crash, which was 40 years ago this March. Stuart has a large collection of artefacts and memorabilia relating to Appledore Station. Full details of this event will be published in next month’s magazine.
