V J Day 80

Japan officially surrendered on Wednesday, 15th August 1945.

Friday, 15th August 2025 marks the 80th Anniversary of the end of six years of continuous warfare between the Allied and Axis powers.

Victory in Europe had already been declared in the UK on Tuesday, 8th May 1945, (VE Day), following the surrender of Nazi Germany.

Appledore Local History Society will honour the occasion by the lighting of our village Beacon at 9:00pm, along with other Towns and Villages across the UK.

Residents and visitors are welcome to attend the ceremony. Appledore’s Beacon is located at the top of Mill Hill, which is readily approachable via public footpaths.
