Heritage Trail (100 Miles for 100 Years)

A successful event was held in Appledore on Saturday, 24th February 2018, with some villagers and visitors participating.

Royal Military Canal

Captain John Noel (Photographer to the 1922 Antarctic Expedition)

Arrangements for Sandra Noel, (his Daughter), to present a talk on his life and works, on 12th April 2018, will not now take place, as we have been informed of her passing on 24th February 2018.

Old Graveyard

As a result of the Heritage Trail, it was noticed that the old graveyard is in a very poor state as relates to vegetation management and in dire need of attention. We are in contact with Ashford Borough Council to establish responsibilities.  It is also intended that recognition be given, by the installation of a CWGC sign at the entrance to the church  grounds, to highlight the graves of those who died in WWl.

PLUTO Signage

Signs have been professionally manufactured and await installation at the two sites within the village, where the remains of the pipeline are still visible.

Martello Tower

Organised visit, by special arrangement, to No. 24, (Dymchurch), arranged for 11th March 2018.

Battle’s Over

A Working Group has been established to manage and coordinate a village celebration of the 100th anniversary of the end of WWl on 11th November 2018. The celebration will include the Playing of the Last Post, the Ringing of the Church Bells and the Lighting of the Beacon. The centre of the event will be at/around the Pavilion (now The Village Hall) at the Recreation Ground, with appropriate refreshments being made available.
