October News

Archives Review

At our September meeting we took the opportunity to look through our extensive collection of old Parish Magazines, some of which date back to the 1960’s.  Each edition is a fascinating snapshot in time, and we hope to begin the process of digitalising the entire collection over the coming months to add to Community Chest.

Brenzett Museum

Our guided tour of Brenzett Aeronautical Museum was a resounding success.  If you haven’t already visited, it really is well worth a trip! – the museum itself is housed in what was the accommodation for the Women’s Land Army during WW2 and is crammed (literally!) with wartime memorabilia. Aside from showcasing the involvement of Appledore and surrounding villages in both World Wars, it also contains exhibits that are unique in British military history.

We all thoroughly enjoyed our visit, and we would like to say a massive ‘thank you’ to our guide, Chris King, whose insight and commentary really added to the morning.

If you are considering visiting the museum any time soon, they are holding a wartime weekend event on the 5th and 6th October featuring WW2 re-enactments, military vehicles, 1940’s fashion and loads more besides.  For more information their website address is www.rmwcollection.co.uk.

The Beacon

Our thanks go to Duncan Gray for installing the individual memorial plaques on the Oak Post of The Beacon at Mill Hill. The Beacon is now almost complete (a little work to do on the base), and we would like to extend our thanks to everyone who helped make this project possible.

Forthcoming Events

Keith Fazzani will be giving a talk entitled “Cory’s Unit – Kent’s Pals “Battalion” in November.  All Welcome!  Full details here

And Finally …

Don’t forget that all our trips and talks are open to non-members and if you have any suggestions, we would love to hear from you! We meet at the Methodist Chapel at 7pm on the second Thursday of every month, or you can contact our Secretary, Jo Killick, on secalhs@gmail.com
