Fun Evening at our Fun Quiz!

As well as raising funds for Appledore Local History Society (ALHS), the Fun Quiz delivered by Graham Selmes on 1st October in the Village Hall was an enjoyable evening! As always, we thank the Selmes family for all their hard work in delivering a great quiz!

The evening was attended by 58 people, making up 11 teams. COVID and other illness reduced numbers a bit. As in the past, it was Bring Your Own booze and nibbles, although soft refreshments and snacks were available to buy also. There were generous cash prizes too, with £100 for the winning team and 3 raffle prizes of cash plus a bottle. There was a lucky ticket prize and also a consolation prize for the team with the lowest score (someone has to be!).

As you may remember, ALHS no longer has a permanent home. Not knowing what the future holds for us or what our outlays might be, we will not be in a position to undertake many projects that involve spending our funds on things that help highlight Appledore’s history.

Our efforts will primarily be aimed at continuing the digitalisation, and protection for the future, of our archives and photos. Also, we will continue to respond to the many enquiries we receive via the website and provide welcome packs to all newcomers to Appledore that we are made aware of.

However, there is one project that we would like to help deliver and you may be able to help us with it! People visit Appledore from all over sometimes looking for graves of their ancestors. An enhanced map with helpful images of the rows of graves in both the closed and open graveyards would assist locating certain graves. A great way to collect information of the layout of both graveyards would be to have aerial photos. We wonder if anyone has a drone with a camera who would be able to help with this? Perhaps it could be a half term project for someone?

If you would like to help us continue our endeavours, you can donate to us by payment direct to our bank account (Appledore Local History Society, which is a business account, sort code 60-01-21, account 56790945) or by cash or cheque to Brian Knight (telephone 01233758319). To join us, or to make any suggestions which could help, please contact us either by email secALHS@gmail.com, or through our Chairman, Brian Knight on 01233 758319 or thrkng@aol.com.
