Rememberance

The Appledore Beacon which was erected to commemorate the 100 year anniversary of the cessation of hostilities during the Great War (WW1), now stands as the only single memorial in the village.  There are two other memorial plaques, one in the Church of St Peter and St Paul and one in the Methodist Hall, but neither has all the names of those lost to the village.

When the Beacon was erected, the aim was to ensure all those who perished had a single memorial place, hence the plaques with the names of the fallen you can see in situ.

As a mark of respect, Appledore Local History Society’s Chairman placed the wreath you can see in the picture to commemorate Remembrance Sunday 2020 and it is the intention of the History Society to do so, each year, in remembrance of those that Appledore has lost in every Conflict.
