ALHS History Talk

The talk provided by Martin Watts on 10th May proved to be entertaining, well received and a fund-raising success for ALHS. The content of the talk surprised us, as it was broader than anticipated. This has taught us some useful lessons for future events.

In our next article, after our AGM (6th June), we shall report how we have raised funds during the last year and how these are spent, in order to reflect the fact that any money we receive is ploughed back in order to fulfil our mission statement.

Thanks to the concerted efforts of ALHS, we have received an undertaking from Ashford Borough Council to improve the state of the churchyard of St Peter and St Paul. Their in house grounds maintenance service provider, Aspire, will be working there in late August/early September (timed to avoid the disturbance of birds nesting and the Flower Festival) to do the following;

  • Cut back vegetation, Remove brambles, Clear all war graves of overgrown vegetation,
  • Fill holes caused by wildlife to prevent trip hazards.

This work should ensure that the graveyard will be in a suitable state ready for the Battle’s Over event over the weekend of 10-11th November 2018.

Applerdore Kent’s Battle’s Over Working Group

The third meeting was held on 16th May. You will notice a banner being put up in front of the Pavilion (now The Village Hall) highlighting the Battle’s Over event in Appledore during the weekend of 10-11th November 2018.  Early stages of organisation at this point but we already have ideas of how you can get involved in the event;  Photos and artefacts to be lent for our display in the pavilion showing your family’s story about WW1, People who would like to announce the names of Appledore’s fallen in the Pavilion (now The Village Hall) before the beacon is lit, any age, perhaps current or former forces personnel, children.  Budding photographers to help us record this historic event.
